Bill to ‘rectify an error’
PA Wellington The Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) has denied that legislation, which is expected to end one company’s hopes to run a ferry service from Bayswater to Auckland, was contrary to departmental advice. He said the legislation had been introduced to “rectify an inadvertent error” made in legislation introduced by the Labour Government in 1974. A former Minister of Marine and National Party member for 41 years, Mr W. J. Scott, has threatened to resign from the party if the Government proceeds with
the legislation, which he said, cut across British justice. Mr Scott, the Prime Minister said, was “very angry about it,” but he told a press conference that the method used in the Transport Amendment No. 2 Bill was the normal way of dealing with such errors. “It is not retrospective legislation. It is simply to correct an unintentional error,” Mr Muldoon said. According to the Minister of Transport (Mr McLachlan) the bill will correct an anomaly in the Transport Act relating to ferry licensing jurisdiction.
