War crimes trial
An East Berlin court has sentenced a 63-year-old East German to life imprisonment for involvement in the murder of at least 165 people in occupied Russia during World War 11. It was the first war-crimes case known to have been heard in East Germany since 1976. The court found Herbert Paland guilty of killing 30 people by his own hand. — East Berlin.
