U.S. beef quota plan

NZPA-Reuter Washington The United States House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee as approved a new beef import quota bill aimed at protecting United States producers against falling prices when supplies are high. The measure was sent to the full House by a 22-10 vote. Under the bill, beef and veal import quotas would be lowered if American domestic supplies were high, and imports increased if they were low. In no case would imports fall below 545 M kg a year. This is roughly the annual average in recent years, but is lower than the 681 M kg expected to enter the United States this year, mainly from Australia, New Zealand and South America.
