Move on trucks, dogs

The Lyttelton Borough Council decided on Monday night to take immediate action against two nuisances in the borough: dangerous goods vehicles and dog fouling.

Cr S. Edwards said that recent overseas accidents emphasised the problem of heavy trucks carrying dangerous goods through towns during busy periods. Most of those passing through. Lyttelton were marked “Dangerous goods. Keep clear 20 feet,” she said.

Cr G. C. Adams agreed and said he had been alarmed about the number of vehicles

marked “Dangerous Goods” driven through the borough. The council agreed to write to the Ministry of Transport seeking help to restrict the movement of vehicles carrying dangerous goods through the main streets of the borough.

Cr Adams also agreed with a request that the works committee act to stop dog fouling and the movement of unlicensed dogs in the borough. Cr W. McGregor said she knew of instances where persons owned three unlicensed dogs, and she was sick of dogs fouling the streets of Lyttelton.
