Another wreck for Receiver

The South Island Receiver of Wreck (Mr J. D. Wisker), who dealt with the Kemphaan recently, has had to deal with another casualty: his own Ministry of Transport vehicle.

Mr Wisker, also regional superintendent for the Marine Division of the Ministry of Transport, parked his car opposite the Canterbury Street office of the division during a visit to Lyttelton. A loud crash was heard outside the office and he found that his black and white Leyland P 76 had been pushed several metres down and out into the middle of the road by

a much smaller Lyttelton Borough Council vehicle. The driverless council vehicle had rolled down the hill after being left parked outside council premises in the old Royal Hotel building. Before attacking Mr Wisher’s car, the smaller car flattened a road sign supported by a 2-inch diameter galvanised pipe. The steel piping was recently installed by the council because of the number of wooden poles destroyed supporting the same sign.

Mr Wisker said the Ministry car might have to be written-off. “But in this case that’s not my decision,” he said.
