Canty thrashed in squash

A very strong Australian Universities squash team defeated Canterbury, 7-1, at the Christchurch Squash Club last evening.. Only Rod Hayes could cope with the visitors’ strength and he was always in command against the Australian No. 1. lan Cooper. The match between the No. 21 men was a stop-start affair, with a lot of loose squash in the first J two games, particularly from i Paul McFadzien. The Australian, Dean Landv, I was down, 6-8. in the second but eame through on McFadzien s I errors. Landy appeared to be in con-, troi. when at 1-2 in the third he ran into McFadzien’s racket and injured his right eye. This affected his play somewhat and! he lost the third and fourth. Australian squash was very evident. The Canterbury women were outclassed. This was made even more obvious when the Australian No. 1, Gail helper, plated twice because of the late arrival of Alison Gilbert. She played Rosemary Davies in the first match and Miss Davies did well to earn 10 points against this very quick mover. Miss Leiper, in the last match played the Canterbury No 1, Merle Holland, and demolished her In quick time for the loss of only seven points. Results (Australian names first) were:— Men I.
