Mourie out
[PA New Plymouth [ A fractured bone at the [base of the spine has forced Taranaki’s All Black captain, [Graham Mourie, out of the team to play Australia in the first rugby test at Wellington on Saturday.
The injury, suffered in the final stages of Taranaki’s national first-division match against South Canterbury at Timaru last Saturday, may be serious enough to keep [Mourie out of the entire three-test series.
I “Naturally, I’m pretty disappointed,” Mourie said last) [night, “but I guess it makes! [someone else happy.” The convener of the All Black selection panel, Mr Jack Gleeson, would not say last night who would replace Mourie as the open-side flanker in the All Blacks. Hot favourite will be Southland’s Leicester Rutledge, who was not included in the reserves, but who has been outstanding in a position now regarded as a specialist one.
Mr Gleeson said from Feilding last night Mourie’s replacement had been decided, but it would not be released by the New Zealand Rugby Football Union until this morning. The union will also name the new captain today. Earlier story, Page 22
