NZPA-Reuter Belgrade New Zealand’s lan Ferguson finished eighth In the final of the one-man kayaks over 500 m event on the final day of the fourteenth world still-water canoe-kayak championships. The winner was Vasile Diba. of Rumania, with Vladimir Parfinovich, of th© Soviet Union, second. East Germany won seven gold medals to top the final medals table. Hungary followed with four gold medals, while the Soviet Union and Rumania each won two; Although th® championships were dominated by the East Europeans, there were a few upsets, with France stealing a silver medal in the two-man kayaks over 10,000 m and Spain taking a silver in th® four-man kayaks over 500 m. New Zealand failed to win a medal.
