Squash tour to start in Chch

By

TIM DUNBAR

The Australian Universities squash team will open its New Zealand tour with a match against a Canterbury invitation side at the Christchurch Squash Rackets Club this evening. Dean Landy, the No. 2 in the Australian junior side which made a visit three years ago, heads the men's team, which also includes lan Cooper, Paul Vekselstein and John Barton.

Top in the women’s lineup is the highly rated Gayle Leiper, with Kathy Finkel de, Alison Gilbert and Kathy Kennewell completing the side. Canterbury will have its strongest possible men’s team with Rod Hayes, Paul

McFadzien, Lawrence Skurr and Neil Rush. The women's team is also quite useful, comprising Merle Holland, Lyn Chamberlain, Lorraine Sutherland and Rosemary Davies.

McFadzien will be looking for the sort of form which allowed him to twice beat the higher-ranked Paul Devoy in straight games during the national championships at Timaru last week. He also took a game off the very talented Cambridge player, Brian Barnett, in the final of the men’s amateur special plate. The visitors will compete i.i the New Zealand Universities’ tournament at Massey and will also have matches at Dunedin, Timaru, WellingHamilton and Auckland.
