Indoor bowlers slip to third
After having the chance of winning at one stage, the Canterbury indoor bowls team, skipped by Mrs Pat Fuller, had to settle for third place at the final of the Rothmans national tournament at Auckland at the week-end.
The winner was the Bay of Plenty entry skipped by Jim Pratt, who won with Central King Country in 1965. He was also the run-ner-up in 1974.
To win, Canterbury needed to beat Bay of Plenty, but after leading for most of the game Canterbury faltered near the end and Pratt
scored a two on the last end to win, 8-6.
Mrs Fuller began with a good win over Alan Bain (Wairarapa), 10-6. Wairarapa won more ends, but a six on one end gave Canterbury as many points as Wairarapa earned on six ends. In the second round Canterbury had an important win over the strong Waikato four skipped by Graham Pederson, a measured shot on the last end giving Canterbury its victory. But in the next round Canterbury was not so lucky, being beaten on the last bowl by Robbie Duncan (Golden Bay). Two wins
then followed, although the 12-6 success over Peter Brooks (Greymouth) was not as decisive as the score might suggest. Killed ends helped Canterbury’s cause greatly. Canterbury _ still had a chance of finishing second going into the last round but it was well beaten by the little-fancied North Wellington team skipped by Brian Thompson. Placings were:-—
