46-nation party last act
NZPA staff correspondent Edmonton “A safe return to our native land.” That was the blessing of the chairman of the Commonwealth Games Federation, Sir Alexander Ross, to the New Zealand Commonwealth Games team yesterday. As they had done at the start of the Games the New Zealander, celebrated at their own party before joining the other 45 nations at the biggest, noisiest, most swinging party Edmonton has ever seen.
The New Zealand High Commissioner to Canada, Mr Dean Eyre, and Mrs Eyre, who had been in Edmonton throughout the Games, also attended the New Zealand party. The general manager of the team, Mr Jack Prestney, of Welington, told the gathering that he was proud of the team, although the harvest of medals had not been as great as had been hoped. ‘‘Thank you all. Your behaviour here has been impeccable and the village authorities have gone out of their way to tell us so,” Mr Prestney said.
