M.P. says Govt cut back jobs
Christchurch workers, ] manufacturers, and retailers ! had had enough of the GovI eminent's dampening-down economic policies, said Mr B. G. Barclay, member of Parliament for Christchurch Central. A Labour Department statement that seasonal unemployment was expected “totally ignores the shutdown ot industries and re l tailers that has taken place over the last 18 months to two years,” Mr Barclay said. Lay-Offs at Auisebrooks were blamed on less consumer demand for the product, and that lessening of demand had been caused by Government economic policies. “The trouble is, every time anyone talks of belttightening or rationalisation, it results in more people being made redundant, and lup g the unemployment fig- ] ures again,” Mr Barclay [said. The Government had to [be told with one voice that I Christchurch needed higher ] productivity and more jobs.
