Visit by U.S. ship

Sir, — While not hostile towards the crew of the guided-missile cruiser, U.S.S. Horne, I am deeply concerned that such ships are permitted in New Zealand waters. The build-up in the South Pacific of United

States nuclear strength is not the defence strategy the public may be fooled into believing: it is part of the military manoeuvring that occurs ~ during war. Vessels such as the Horne are precursors of the Trident submarine — due to be deployed in the South Pacific in 1979. These submarines, each capable of destroying 2000 Hiroshimas, are unanswerable first-strike weapons. They are designed to destroy in an in» stantaneous and unforewarned attack the entire armaments system of the enemy. Thus, we can expect nuclear-armed Russian antisubmarine warships to anpear in the Pacific. Clearly the two super-Powers are carrying out their battle in the South Pacific. By permitting the Horne and such vessels into our ports, New Zealand becomes part of the battlefield. —- Yours, etc., ANNE FINDLAY. August 13, 1978.
