Five Games golds at stake today

Five gold medals will be at stake on the first day of competition at the Edmonton Commonwealth Games today and high hopes are held for New Zealand competitors in several events.
' New Zealand has a good I chance of claiming a medal lin the 4 x 100 m men’s ! freestyle relay, the first swimming final in the Kinsmen Sports Centre pool. Barry Salisbury, who earlier gave team officials anxious moments when he hurt his shoulder, is fully recovered and will swim the first leg. The others in swimming order will be Brett Naylor, lan Bullock, and Paul Rowe. “It will be close but there is a chance of a bronze medal if we can get it all together,” said the chief coach (Mr R. J. Mclntyre). The other swimming final is the women’s 100 m freestyle in which New Zealand will not be represented. The first gold medal in the track cycling is in the 1000 m individual time trial. Michael Fabish. who made a bold showing for New Zealand in the pre-Games meeting a week ago, is expected to do well. The other New Zealand entrant is Michael Richards, an Olympic representative at Montreal two years ago. The remaining two gold:
. medals will both be decided !in the weight-lifting tn the plush Jubilee Auditorium. IThe two events are the flyweight (52kg) and bantamweight (56kg). The defending title-holder in the fly-weight division, Precious McKenzie, is entered for both. He will withdraw from one today and is expected to win the other and gain Nev. Zealand’s first gold medal of the Games.
There will be activity in three other sports today: badminton, bowls, and boxing. Team preliminaries will be held in badminton, preliminary bouts in boxing, and the fours, pairs and singles will begin in bowls. The shooting will begin tomorrow (N.Z. time) at the Strathcona range with the Clay-pigeon preliminaries. The track and field event will being on Monday and will feature the 10,000 m. The hammer and women’s pentathlon finals will also be decided. The gymnastics will also begin on Monday with the women’s team final. The last of the 10 sports to begin competition will be wrestling, scheduled to start ion Thursday (N.Z. time).
