Help for adult readers
A reading assistance Officer will visit members of the Christchurch W.E.A’s pilot literacy programme on August 9 and 10. Mrs Rosalie Somerville, of the National Council of Adult Education, travels about New Zealand giving support and advice to each of the 28 programmes being run. She is based at the Hawke’s Bay Communitv College. As well as meeting W.E.A. members, Mrs Somerville will talk with members of the Christchurch Altrusa Club, which has a particular interest in these programmes. About 80 potential stu-i dents live inquired about the Christchurch programme, and 28 of these work one-to-one with voluntary tutors. About 128 people have volunteered as tutors, and 34 Of these have been trained. Another tutor-training course will be held in September. The literacy programme is aimed at adults with reading and writing difficulties, and lessons take place at the home of the tutor or student. As this is a pilot project, an evaluation will be done later this year.
