Proposed tribunal on police complaints

Sir, — The Chief Ombudsman’s proposal for an independent body to hear complaints involving the police (“The Press,” July 19) is very welcome. He has pointed out that his office is unable to handle such matters effectively because of police refusal to acknowledge jurisdiction in certain areas, combined with the difficulties of securing evidence or appropriate remedies. Such a proposal is particularly timely because of the suggested extension of police powers in the area of listening devices. The Government’s response will be a good measure of the seriousness of its intentions regarding the protection of individual freedoms. — Yours, etc.,

LUKE TRAINOR July 26, 1978.
