Girls’ High orchestra doing well
The Christchurch Girls’ High School string orchestra, the winner of the large-group instrumental section of the 1977 Bank of New South Wales School Music Contest, has agam been named as one of the two groups to participate in the national final, which is being held in Wellington on August 13. The other group competing in this division for seven to 13 players is the Kings Stringers from Kings College, Auckland. The Christchurch Girls High School Orchestra comprises 10 violins, two violas, two cellos and one bass. The work it presented at the district finals was the Largo, from “Divertimento for Strings” by Walters. The Madeleine Quartet of the Christchurch School of Instrumental Music has been selected as one of the five finalists in the small-group division (three to six players), and will go to Wellington for the finals.
The other four ensembles in the small group finals are: Khachaturian Kapers of Wellington, the King’s Trio of Auckland, the Parima Trio of Dunedin and the Caviar Quintet from Palmerston North.
