Presentation delay

The presentation of a medal for bravery to a Christchurch prison officer has now been thrown into confusion.

Yesterday, the Minister of Social Welfare (Mr Walker) who was to have presented the Queen’s Commendation for Bravery to Mr Peter Crichton, first officer at Addington Prison, said he would not now do so because he did not wish to offend Mrs Crichton. (Mrs Crichton has said the

medal should be presented by the Governor-General, or at least the Minister of Justice.) The Justice Department has now decided to “postpone” the presentation.

Mr Walker said that although Mrs Crichton might not want him to present the medal he offered his congratulations to Mr Crichton for his bravery during a prison outbreak last year.
