Mount loses soccer lead

After leading the other 11 sides on a wearying chase since April 17, Mount Wellington has lost the lead in the Rothmans Soccer League. On Saturday it was beaten. 1-0, by its fellow Auckland side, Courier Rangers. The teams have now met four times this season in Rothmans League or Adidas Challenge Trophy matches, both teams having won twice. Dave Taylor, the outstanding individual, scored the only goal with a long range drive, in a match spoilt by long periods of dull play. Eastern Suburbs took over the lead with a crushing, 6-2. win • over Wellington Diamond United. ; In his last match before returning to England Steve Elliott scored twice, bringing his tally I to 17 goals in 12 matches. He has scored half Suburbs' goals;' to date. It was the fourth time this sea- : ; son that Suburbs has scored four | or more goals in a match. , Trans Tours United kept up its , challenge with a 0-0 draw against Columbus Waterside in Wellington. The capital city is never , an easy place in which to win a -match and the United coach • (Mr Terry Conley) will probably be happy to have picked up a point. It was a match that neither side deserved to win. mainly j with a large number of chances J missed by both teams. : If United wins all its catch-up 1 games, it could win the competi- 1 tion. > Stop Out beat Hamilton. 3-2. 1 although it played out part of 1 the match with only 10 men—its i
striker, Peter Moxham, was sent off. A goal by Mike Farac five minutes after the start of the match enabled Blockhouse Bay to beat Nelson United in Nelson yesterday. It came after a scramble following a corner. Results:— Columbus Waterside 0, Trans Tours United 0. Mount Wellington 0, Courier Rangers 1 (Dave Taylor). Halftime 0-0. Nelson United 0.
