Canada bans S.A. athletes
NZPA Ldmonton, Alberta The Canadiar. Government will bar South African athletes from Canada in order to prevent any “unpleasantness” during the Commonwealth Games, a Federal Government official has said. The Minister of Fitness and Amateur Sport (Mrs lona Campagnolo) said yesterday that the ban would apply to South African sports organisations, as well as individuals.
“We couldn't take any chances that there might be some South African representatives .oming to the Games who could pre-
cipitate some unpleasantness,” she said. The ban means Canada will refuse to grant nonimmigrant visas for the Games, which will begin on August 3, to South African athletes and sports representatives. South Africa is no longer a member of the Commonwealth. The Minister said the decision on the ban was a follow-up to the Gleneagles Agreement which Commonwealth leaders reached last vear. The agreement urged Commonwealth countries to do everything possible to discourage sporting ties with South Africa.
