Coastal protection sought
Waimairi County has been asked by the Christchurch City Council to join in a study by Dr R. M. Kirk, of the geography department at the University of Canteri bury, on physical stability [and land use along the coastal zone from the Waiimakariri River south. If Waimairi County agrees the survey costs would be split between the two authorities on the basis of length of coastline surveyed. ■file City Council has estimated the total cost of the survey at $12,800. The Waimairi works, reserves and traffic committee last evening considered protection of the Waimairi Surf Club building, which was seriously threatened by high jseas during the week-end of (June 23-25. Erosion of the beach, after the heavy seas and high tides, had come to within 4.5 metres of the clubhouse, said the county engineer (Mr A. J. W, Lamb). It was suggested that plastic-covered wire mesh cages filled with big stones be laid on the beach slope to form an apron at the ocean frontage of the building. The cost was estimated by Mr Lamb as $6500. An alternative concrete sea wall, he said. would cost about S 10.000 and be more difficult ito construct.
