Road tunnel's cost
Sir, — The apathy shown by the Government towards the Christchurch-Lyttelton tunnel is only equalled by th»' lack of enterprise and the poor homework done by some Christchurch local bodies in their pitiful efforts to get rid of the tolls. If the Government and the National Roads Board could find SI7M for 2.2 km of urban motorway, including quite a long tunnel, recently in Wellington, those two bodies can find the SSM necessary to repay the Lyttelton tunnel loan. The tolls would then be abolished. The tunnel would become part of the national reading system, and the Ministry of Works and Development would maintain it as agent for the National Roads Board. — Yours, etc., F. CHISHOLM.
