A Momona dairy farmer, John Thornton, won his second Atlantic Silver Plough championship in succession in the final of the 1978 contest at Studholme during the i week-end. Thornton beat another Otago ploughman, Noel Sheat (Palmerston) by only a point, but both will travel to the 1978 world ploughing match at Stuttgart, West Germany, later this year. Thornton competed at the 1977 world championships in the Netherlands, where he became the first New Zealander to win a medal at the world event, by gaining a bronze.
