66 drugs taken off 'free’ list

PA Wellington Sixty-six medicines which were on the “free" list at the beginning of 1976 now have to be paid for in part lor in full by patients, the Minister of Health (Mr Gill) has told Parliament. ! He said this action had been taken on the recommendation of a committee of ! doctors which had considered that there was a sufficient range of cheaper products available free of charge. Mr Gill, who was replying to a question by Mr W. W. Freer (Lab., Mt Albert) said there were 17 brands of certain medicines for which identical drugs were available at a lower price.

Five medicines had become a full charge on patients because it was felt that they were no longer suitable therapy. Since January 1, 1976, 56 items had been added to the drug tariff and qualified under the pharmaceutical benefit scheme.
