Maori youth programme announced
PA Wellington . A programme to advance the educational achievement of Maori and Pacific Island youth was announced recently by the Minister of Maori and Island Affairs (Mr MacIntyre). To be known as .the Tu Tangata (the stance of the people) Project, the programme’s immediate aim is to form action groups at a .local level concentrating on specific tasks. Among these would be to encourage and help students in third and fourth forms prepare for examinations; to assist postprimary pupils to enter traineeships or careers; to assist School Certificate , University Certificate, and University Entrance candidates where necessary; and to help students prepare for a successful university life. The over-all aim of the programme will be to assist pupils and parents, to come to grips with educational objectives and problems through counselling, technical training, and other support measures. Mr Maclntyre said that the New Zealand Maori Council, the New Zealand Maori Women’s Welfare League, and the New Zealand Maori Education Foundation would seek the full support of the Maori people for the programme, which would be initiated and led by Maori people.
