Some soccer surprises
Five Rcthmans Soccer League sides were eliminated in the thira round of the Adidas Challenge Trophy series at the week-end—-including the league leader, Mount Wellington. Mount Wellington was beaten, 1-0, by Courier Rangers in a game it should have won. Graham Storer scored the decisive goal. Blockhouse Bay beat North Shore, 3-1, after extra-time with goals from Mike Farac, Kevin Hagan and Peter Mazany. Adrian Elrick scored Shore’s goal in the second half.
Hamilton was beaten by a
northern regional league side, Lynndale, 3-2, after extra-time while, in Wellington, Wellington Diamond United crushed Columbus Waterside, 5-0. W.D.U. could have reached double figures but for poor finishing, the one bad aspect in an otherwise good display. Waterside, missing four of its best players, had nothing to offer. The W.D.U. goals were scored by Peter Rowe, Peter Brown, Andy van den Ende, Mike Simenoff (penalty) and Gary Paddison. Woolston W.M.C. lost, 2-3 to Rangers, in appalling conditions at Rangers Park. Rangers had the sort of start
that coaches dream of: three goals in the first nine minutes. Steve Elliott scored five goals as Eastern Suburbs crushed Papakura City, 8-2, in Auckland. Results:—Blockhouse Bay 3, North Shore 1 (after extra time); Lynndale 3, Hamilton 2 (after extra time); Papakura 2, Eastern Suburbs 8; Mount Wellington 1. Courier Rangers 0; Taranaki United 0, Nelson Suburbs 0 (Nelson won on penalties); Stop Out 4, Petone 0; W.D.U. 5, Columbus Waterside 0; Masterton 5, Kiwi United 1; Porirua 2. Stokes Valley 1; Nelson United 4, Wanganui Athletic 1; Manurewa 5. Metro College 0: Rotorua City 0, Hertz Whangarei 1; Trans Tours United 4, New Brighton 0; Rangers 3, Woolston W.M.C. 2; Caversham 3, Rangiora 2; Dunedin City 7, Technical 0.
