Linwood holds 2-point lead

Linwood kept its two-point lead in the eighth round of matches in the A grade interclub table tennis competition at the Selwyn Street hall on Wednesday evening. It had an easy 10-2 win ! over Riccarton I and the fact that it won by such a margin •is even more creditable considering that its leading player. Ling Nan Ming, was not playing. Gary Saunders and Michael Hamel dropped two games between them in six matches and. together with Michael Prisk. they won all three doubles matches, all in three games. Avonside 1 had a slight struggle before beating Riccarton 11. 7-5. Wayne Adamson won his three matches, including his second victory over Stuart Armstrong in five days. He beat the promising Armstrong in five games in the final of the Canterbury open championship last Saturday.

Maurice Burrowes. after I convincingly beating John Armstrong, led Stuart Armstrong 11-3 in the final game. From that position he should certainly have won the match. However, a succession of poor shots and a strong fight-back by Armstrong, enabled the Riccarton player to take 10 consecutive points, and eventually win the match. Les Stewart lost to both Armstrongs but beat Christine Kehoe in straight games. That result meant that, with only the final doubles remaining, Avonside led. 14-12, on games and it only required to win one | game in the final match to ! win the contest. Adamson ] and Burrowes won the final (doubles in straight games. Avonside IV won its first match of the season, beating University, 8-4. Its cause was helped enormously by the non-appearance of Harry Redmond. which automatically meant it won five matches by defaut.

John Yang recorded a notable victory. 10-21, 22-20, 21-15. over Yee Chow Boi. Yee was leading, 19-16, in the second game but some-

.how let the match slip awav from him. Redmond was one of two players forced to default their matches in the round. The Selwyn player. Mathew Inglis, failed to turn up. which helped Avonside II to a comfortable 10-2 win over ; Selwyn. Avonside 111 had a narrow ( 16 games to 15 win over (Dallington.
