Knox falls in badminton

North Beach 1 took an important step towards keeping its A-grade badminton title when u beat Knox by the overwhleming margin of seven matches to one in the twelfth round on Saturday.

Knox was the only team likely to extend North Beach before its last-round tie against its closest rival, Railway. By winning all but one match through North Beach can be quite confident of having points in hand when the final round is reached.

Railway had the bye on Saturday, leaving it effectively two points behind North Beach 1. The only worry North Beach has is that it would clip back next week-end when its two leading players, Peter Whiting and Alison Ross, will be away at a tournament in the North Island. However, the club has been successful in having the next two rounds switched, leaving its top team with the bye next Saturday. Oddly enought, the match North Beach lost onSturday was

the top mixed doubles. Whiting and Miss Ross were beaten in straight games by Warren Edgecumbe and Janet Miles.

However, North Bech had no worries in any of the other matches and it quickly asserted itself by taking all four singles without losing a game. Two other ties were also won decisively. Canterbury 1, which has slipped badly this year, had a 6-2 win over its No. 2 team — its first win since it faced the same opponent earlier in the season.

North Beach II was untroubled to beat Hagley 11, 6-2, although the top Hagley man, Ross Campbell, played well. He conclusively beat Mike Nolan at singles, combined with Rosie Kerr for an equally impressive mixed doubles victory; and only just lost his men’s doubles with Peter Watts, who was substituting for an injured Paul Boatwood. The fourth tie resulted in a close finish: Hagley 1 and Uni-

versify each winning four matches. The decision, on a points count-back (233-193), was in favour of Hagley 1. If nothing else, the result confirmed University’s improvement since it lost, 2-6, to Hagley 1 back in April.
