Girl qualifies
The Canterbury tennis representative, Sally Chapman, aged 19, has been accepted as a contestant in the mixed doubles event at Wimbledon without having to tackle qualifying matches. She and her partner, Dale Collings (Australia) won the New Zealand mixed title last summer and have won two tournament finals in England in their current campaign. The Christchurch girl and Brenda Perry (Auckland) were beaten in a three-set qualifying match for the
women’s doubles. New Zealand’s top-ranked women’s tennis player, Judy Chaloner, will get the chance to play in the Wimbledon women’s singles after winning three tough qualifying matches for the prestigious tournament.
The Aucklander’s firstround game next Tuesday against the top-ranked United States junior, Sheila Maclnerney, will be the first time Chaloner has qualified for Wimbledon since her debut in 1975.
