In the opening round of | the A grade last week, j Shirley accounted for Si Bede’s without losing a ’game. Shirley’s strongest lopposition is likely to come from the two Christchurch ■ teams . ’ The Christchurch A team, tied bv Warwick Norton, joint wipner of the Canterbuiv scnoolpupiis’ tournament in the May holidays, ha> a 5-1 victory against Christ’s' College. j College's win was sained on board three where Martin Carrell, who gained experience in last year’s tournament, beat Donald Anderson. The first round in the B grade was notable for the j success of the rural schools. Darfield made an auspicious debut in the tournament, beating Burnside B — a traditionally strong chess school — decisively. In the > same zone, Rangiora dropped jonh one game against St i Andrew’s. in the second zone. Ash- I I burton accounted for Middle- i ton Grange and Heaton.
