Study of silica export potential
; PA Whangarei. New Zealand Steel. Ltd, is investigating a large new export industry based on *• silica' deposits in Northland. Tire company has applied to the Secretary of Mines for an exploration licence for 21,000 ha takI ing in all the land beI tween the Houhora Harbour and North Cape. It said that it was seeki ing to prove substantial ! reserves of silica in the area. I “We have the facilities and we have the tech- : nology that would make I mining, processing, and shiploading of bulk mat- ■ erial quite possible.” said I an official.
. He said that New Zealand Steel had recently ; installed a new off-shore mooring buoy at Taharoa, near its ironsand deposits, i which could handle bulk carriers of up to 130.000 tonnes. Silica, used in glass- | making and in making alloys, had a good market j in a number of countries. The company’s initial in- | vestigation was to establ- ; ish just what market potential there was. Transport costs would also require careful study. During the two-year period of the licence the company would also investigate the mineral resources of the area, probably starting in the field next summer.
