TRAINS WEST
The pride and joy of West Coast railwaymen is an A class steam locomotive, No. 428, which is owned and cared for by its own preservation society in Greymouth. A 248 was built at the Thames (Coromandel Peninsula) works of A. and G, Price, Ltd. It entered service in the North Island on November 6,1909. was transferred to the South Island in June, 1933, and was "retired” at Reefton
in June, 1969, on the introduction of diesel-pow-ered locomotives. According to a Greymouth railwayman, Mr lan Coates, who has researched its history, A 428 was designed by Mr G. A. Pearson under the direction of Mr A. L. Beattie "in an era of polish and shining brass.” The A class were built to overcome a shortage of powerful locomotives needed for the opening of
