The Public Library
Sir, — I am more and more convinced that, apart from providing a son to civic pride, it is unwise to spend a large sum of money on a new central library. As long as people can drive their cars they will do their shopping that way and it is the lack of free, easy parking that is closing down the city’s retail businesses and sending trade out to the suburbs. Wherever the new library is put it will be a hassle changing books. What I would like to see is the present library retained, mainly as a reference library and the money spent in upgrading the suburban libraries which are much more convenient to get to. — Yours, etc., C. H. TURNER. ‘ June 23, 1978.
