Vehicle relicensing
Sir, — The statement by the Chief Postmaster, Mr E, A. G. Grandi, (“The Press,” June 20) is inconsistent with the information on the appii» cation for class 4 motor-car licence for 1978-79 form M.R.IC. In the notes for applicant, No. 1: “This form is to be used during June or July for relicensing a motorcar or station waggon type vehicle which is designed principally for the carriage of passengers.” Surely tin's applies to privately owned motor-cars, which doubtless constitute a major part of the 156,000 vehicles in Christchurch, which, according to Mr Grandi, have to be relicensed before the end of June. Why on earth does Mr
Grandi state that “motorists will be inconvenienced by long queues in the last week before the licensing year ends on Friday, June 30, unless they apply for new ’icences this week” when the form clearly states that the end of July is the deadline for relicensing? — Yours, R. S. UNWIN. M. G. UNWIN. June 20, 1978. [The manager of the Chief Postmaster’s office (Mr J. M. Kinraid) replies: “The law requires that no vehicle be driven without a current licence. Motor-vehicles must be relicensed before July 1 if they are to be used after the end of the 1977-78 licensing year on June 30. However, vehicle owners may relicense their cars at any time of the year if they are not being used after the licence expiry date. The M.R. IC form is used in regard to the full fee payable either in advance in June or throughout July. From July onwards the fee for the next .12 months is reduced correspondingly each month and a different form is used.”]
