New road rule
Sir, — The article on the new right-of-way rule at uncontrolled intersections, and explanations offered by Ministry of Transport officials, missed the crux of the problem. There is confusion, not just because drivers are not familiar with the new rule, but mainly because uncertainty is built into it. Under the old rule, if you were turning right, you knew you gave way to everyone. No uncertainty. Now, you may have to yield (to straightthrough traffic) or you may not (to left-turners). First uncertainty, particularly if the left-turner does not indicate. Then, having gained the right-of-way, do vou take it, or should you wait in case that next vehicle comes straight through? Second uncertainty. And if you have a right-turner on your right, you are back at square one, or are vou? The old law may have needed improving, but there must be a better way than this. — Yours, etc.,
