The Lincoln Cottage
Sir, — The decision of the Ellesmere County Council to decline an application for the removal and consequent preservation of a building on the basis of its age needs testing in the courts. The duty of local authorities is surely to protect the legacies of the past — mature trees, old buildings, and to preserve what can be preserved. The depopulation of our country districts has caused a deterioration in the quality of services offered rural people. It is in the interests of the country as a whole that existing housing in the country is retained, and the opportunity is taken, by way of subdivision or otherwise, to settle more people there. More intensive forms of cultivation, with their potential for substantial gains in net energy terms, for a lower imported energy input, and
for the diversification of exports, would also allow more people to share in a style of life preferable to that in the cities. — Yours, etc.,
T. N. D. ANDERSON June 21, 1978.
