Reporter suspended

Westport reporter After 15 years as a par t-time broadcasting journalist in Buller, Mr Eamon O’Connor, of Waimangaroa, has been suspended. Mr O’Connor has been told that he cannot work for the Broadcasting Corporation while he is standing as Social Credit candidate for the West Coast seat at the General Election. He believes he will be reinstated after the election.

Mr O’Connor said yesterday that he was disappointed about the suspension because he had always tried to be unbiased. “Broadcasting officials claim that a similar suspension has occurred in the North Island, but I think it is the result of a local complaint,” he said. Mr O’Connor emphasised that he had no. quarrel with local broadcasting staff, who had always treated him with consideration.
