Youngster in for belting?

Two karate records are expected to be created by the Seido Club in Christchurch this week-end when three exponents attempt promotion to black belt. One of the candidates is a 16-year-old Xavier College pupil, Harry Roelofs, who will be the youngest to attain the grading in the South Island if he is successful. Roelofs, who also had a blue belt in judo, comes from a family steeped in martial arts. His sister. Francis, is a judo brown belt and recently had a shock win over the second dan black belt, Sandy Manderson. Another sister was a former national junior judo champion but now concentrates on karate. Also attempting the promotion will be a young Christchurch couple, Charles and Jenny White, who started karate together about four and a half years ago. It is believed that this is the first time in New Zealand that a husband and wife have progressed simultaneously from white through to bl ack'belt.

Charles White, a 25-year-old teacher, has also participated in tennis, yoga, squash and weight-lifting
