Davenport in Canty squad
Even though Stuart Davenport will soon be shifting to Hastings he is almost certain to play for Canterbury in the national inter-district squash teams event at Timaru in August. The 15-year-old Bumside junior has been added to the province’s senior training squad as, apparently, he will still fulfil Canterbury residential qualifications. He would probably have been No. 1 for Hawke’s BayGisborne but his fine squash brain will most likely be operating in the No. 3 spot for Canterbury, behind Rod Hayes and Paul McFadzien. The final Canterbury team of five for the teams’ event is to be announced on July 2 with the probable line-up at this stage being (in playing order): Hayes, McFadzien, Davenport, Neil Rush and Lawrence Skurr. Possible women’s team members are Merle Holland,
Kathy Graham, Phillipa Lush, Lorraine Sutherland and Lyn Chamberlain. Unfortunately, Hayes will not be travelling down to Dunedin for the South Island championships this week-end but most of the other top Canterbury players have entered. Brian Simpson (Auckland )is the top men’s seed, ahead of the Canterbury trio, McFadzien, Skurr and Barrie Matthews. Mrs Graham has been given the top women’s ranking rather than Mrs Holland — twice her conqueror this season — but she is in doubt because of a calf muscle juryThe other seeds compete what one official referred to as '‘a bunch of crocks.” Miss Lush, seeded third, recently had a lay-off because of an arm injury and Joanne Milne (Otago), the No. 4, is recovering from the torn leg muscle she suffered at the start of the season.
