Drivers’ wages

Sir, —The advertisement (“The Press” June 16) by the New Zealand Road Transport Association, Contractors’ Federation and the Employers’ Federation undercuts their own case against the drivers’ 13 per cent wage claim. The employer organisations claim that if the 13 per cent rise were to be granted then “the average driver on the 10-14 ton truck rate” would be on a weekly wage of $119.95. This is annual pay of $6250. This is less than the average wage by some margin, and by today’s standards it is a pittance especially for a driver with say, a mortgage and a non-working wife. Remember that $6250 a year is not what the drivers are getting but what they will get if they get the 13 per cent rise, which the employer organisations have the gall to describe as extravagant. ■ — Yours, etc., S. J. PAYNE. June 20, 1978.
