West Coast life

Sir.—On Monday night I watched a television programme about the Buller County Council’s continuing persecution of the young people trying to establish themselves on the West Coast. Having lived on the Coast for a couple of years the following points come to mind: (a) The Coast is not exactly booming and should surely be encouraging those who by moving there are injecting new blood into the area thereby halting its degeneration. (b) The building and health inspector mentioned that one of the main complaints against people living alternative lifestyles on the Coast was their lack of adequate toilet facilities,

and that instead of septic tanks they used their wastes on the garden. In Millerton, above Granity, those residents who do not possess flush toilets have their buckets removed by the council nightcart man who then empties them into a river. Their hypocrisy is amazing. — Yours, etc.
