Museum employees’ pay

Sir, — I read with interest Mr P. J. Skellerup’s remarks to which Mrs Sutherland replies that only a few of the museum staff had approached Mr, J. L. Comhill of the P.S.A. on their salary claims, and that the rest of the staff were content with the effort being made to bring salaries up to national standards. Few is a very vague number and no doubt it is easy for Mr Skellerup, who does not have to live on their salaries, to make reassuring public statements. The increase in building costs because of inflation is blamed for the problem of underpaid workers. Such a statement reflects values that regard buildings as being more important than those who

staff them. One can only hope that Mr Skellerup will reconsider his priorities. Perhaps those staff who are unconcerned do have union representation and do not have up to 40 per cent disparity with national standards. — Yours, etc., H. HARRIS. June 21, 1978.
