Industrial relations

Sir, —The Prime Minister’s statement on industrial relations (“The Press,” June 17) appears as another attempt to hoodwink people into believing that the punitive legislation that his

Government has introduced is solving our industrial problems. Labour Department statistics will show that industrial strife has been at an all time high under this Administration. It has been clearly demonstrated that the executive decisionmakers of the Government do not comprehend the critical areas of industrial relations but rather choose to score points, in many cases, against the wiser advice of the Minister of Labour. Continued Government interference in industrial procedures will not bring peace. A paternalistic “spare the rod” approach is a Victorian solution that has no place in a society where people and groups have the right to exercise their democratic right with dignity. Laws, be they industrial or civil, are created to serve the needs of people, not systems, and ultimately to facilitate better human relations in a free society. — Yours, etc..
