Mr Muldoon in Blenheim

Sir, — The correspondent who criticised the Prime Minister has plenty of company. I have a feeling that Mr Muldoon will not be Prime Minister after 1978, and indeed may not even retain the post until November. Despite the support of the likes of Edward Latter it has become clear to most National members, including many senior ones, that their bullying leader is the party’s biggest liability. Come polling day, he will lose National many votes that the party would otherwise have gained. With Mr Muldoon as leader, National will either lose the election or — more likely — scrape home by a handful of seats. Either way, the next event, traditional in Right-wing parties, will be the hunt for a scapegoat. They will not have far to look. — Yours, etc. lAN HOOD. Blenheim. June 20, 1978.
