Several may bid for hulk
The owner of the bumtout Kemphaan has declared the vessel a total loss, and “other interested parties” are considering buying the wreck. The Receiver of Wrecks (Mr J. D. Wisker) said last evening that the parties would inspect the vessel this morning. He would not say who the parties were, or how many there were. The vessel is now in the custody of the Receiver of Wrecks, and in the care of the Lyttelton Harbour Board on his behalf. The inspection today results from talks yesterday between the owner (Mr P. Warner, of Tonga), the Marine Division of the Ministry of Transport, the Harbour Board, and the insurance company. The representative of the insurance company, Mr G. W. Dunsford, said that it would be quite uneconomic to repair the Kemphaan. Asked if his company was prepared to pay out on the total loss of the vessel, Mr Dunsford said: “No official decision has been made it this stage.” One crewman died In the fire at sea on Sunday, and another man, Mr Vili Vafafisi, is still reported in a serious condition in Burwood Hospital, and in isolation. His wife arrived in Christchurch yesterday.
