Cricketers arrive
NZPA staff correspondent London The New Zealand cricket team arrived in London last night (N.Z. time) on schedule for the start of its 2i month tour of England. The teain went straight to its hotel near the famous Lord’s cricket ground in the London suburb of St Johns Wood. Meanwhile the tour was welcomed yesterday by Michael Melford, writing in the London “Daily Telegraph MeKord said Mark Burgess’s tourists had a “better chance of doing themselves justice” than the Pakistanis, whose earlyseason tour is now drawing to a close.
| New Zealand was well-equipped [with Richard Hadlee, Geoff Howarth and John Wright playing successfully in England for various English county sides, and with senior batsmen tike Burgess and the former captain, Bevap Congdon. “It would ndt take much to turn them Into a useful side, depending on what bowling support there is for Hadlee.” he wrote. Both Hadlee and Howarth have been named to receive £250 bonus awards at the Oval today. Howarth receives his for scoring 600 runs during May — the highest in the county championship — and Hadlee for his 32 wickets during the month — also the highest in the championship.
