Borg’s title
NZPA-Reuter Paris Having proved his total mastery on slow clay courts in Italy and at the French open in Paris, Bjorn Borg, of Sweden, now turns his attention to grass, in the hopes of a third successive Wimbledon title.
Borg, who coasted through the French championships without losing a set, plays a Davis Cup match for Sweden against Yugoslavia in Belgrade this week. Then he moves to England, where he plans to practise non-stop on grass and adjust his game for the British championships. Even before he won the French title yesterday, the
Swede made it clear that his major objective in 1978 was to take Wimbledon for the third successive year, to match the 40-year-old achievement of Britain’s Fred Perry. For a man with half a mind elsewhere, however, Borg found enough concentration to dominate his archrival, Guillermo Vilas, of Argentina, totally in yesterday’s final. He scarcely put a foot wrong to win, 6-1, 6-1, 6-3 in 109 min.
Another reigning champion to fall was Mima Jausovec, of Yugoslavia, who lost her women’s singles title to the Rumanian, Virgina Ruzici, 6-2, 6-2.
