Country team strong
Paul Shannon, a 22-year-old wing from Lincoln, is the only newcomer in the Canterbury Sub-unions rugby team that will leave tomorrow on a three-match tour of the Seddon Shield Districts.
Sub-unions’ first game will be against West Coast at Greymouth tomorrow. On Saturday it will meet Buller at Westport and the tour will end with a game against Marlborough at Blenheim next Tuesday. The side will be close to full strength, with Doug Bruce and Andy Jefferd its only Canterbury players staying behind.
The forwards include Alex Wyllie, Graeme Higginson, Bruce Fanner and Barry Thompson and should be the side’s greatest strength.
The touring party is: — Dennis Smolensk!, Shannon. Stewart Bray, Chris Rushbridge. Andrew Munro, Bruce Dunbar, Chris Rhodes, John Munro. Bob Grant: Wyllie, Geoff Henderson, Ross Loffhagen, Barney Henderson, Alan Martin, Higginson, Farmer, Thompson, Jim Stubbs, Graham Sanderson, Hugh Taylor and Matt Wilson.
