Games O.K. for Rayno
PA Auckland Folasi Ray no will be able to represent New Zealand in boxing at the Edmonton Commonwealth Games despite his recent conviction for overstaying.
Rayno has been given permission to stay in New Zealand for a further three months, which will include the Edmonton Games in August, but he must then return to his native Samoa and re-apply to come to New Zealand as a permanent resident.
He has been assured that everything will be done to help him so that be can continue his boxing career under his Otara trainer, Billy Opetaia, and have the opportunity to represent New Zealand at the Moscow Olympic Games.
Rayno will leave with the New Zealand boxing team on Friday for Muhammad Ali’s training camp in the United States where the team is to prepare for the Games under Ali’s sponsorship. Rayno’s amateur status has also been clarified. The Samoan Boxing Association has confirmed that Rayno had not fought in Samoa except as an amateur, clearing the way for the talented young man to fight for the country of his choice.
