Consolation in French Oaks

. NZPA Chantilly The owner, Mr Jacques I Wertheimer, trainer, Alec Head, and jockey Freddy Head, gained quick consolation for the narrow defeat of Dancing Maid in Saturday’s Epsom Oaks when Reine de Saba captured the equivalent French classic, the Prix de Diane on Sunday. Taking the lead a furlong out, the handsome Lyphard filly strode away from the tiring English challenger, Cistus, to win by two lengths. Cistus. ridden by Willie Carson, just held on for second place against a late challenge from Calderina and the outsider, Paddle, which took third and fourth places respectively. It was a first win in the classic for Mr Wertheimer, whose Epsom Oaks bid with Dancing Maid was foiled only by a short head by Fair Salinia. For Alec Head it was a second Prix de Diane victory. He won the race in. 1971 with Pistol Packer. Carson sped Cistus into the lead soon after the field turned into the straight. But| the trip of one mile 2j furlongs seemed just too much for Sir Michael Sobell’s filly.

Athletics.—The Olympic champion, Alberto Juantorena (Cubai. won the 800 m in Imin. 44.97 s on rhe second day of an international athletics meeting in Rratizlava, Czechoslovakia, on Saturday.
